In 1998, a partnership was formed with The LEGO Group to develop an innovative custom retail product incorporating the LEGO license with a proprietary design and function. The initial vision was to create a revolutionary writing instrument that supported the creativity, quality and image of the LEGO brand.

The LEGO Writing System Group was established to develop, design and market this new retail line which was born in November 1999 based on six very unique pens. Each style contained LEGO-compatible bead elements that when arranged, spelled words or coded messages or created 3 dimensional LEGO themes. In addition to the fun play pattern, these pens were enhanced with practical features such as an acrylic collector case, a variety of interchangeable beads, a soft tri-grip and a replaceable ink cartridge. Each pen embodied the underlying LEGO philosophy of unlimited play possibilities, imagination and creativity.

The LEGO Writing System pens officially debuted at the American International Toy Fair in New York City in February 2000. And now the LEGO Writing System pens can be found in over 5000 specialty toy and gift stores nationwide.
